Benito Mussolini
Benito Mussolini was born on July 29, 1883 in Predappio, Northern Central Italy. He was poor growing up, and his father spoke a lot of politics which caused Mussolini to follow in his footsteps. Aggressive but intelligent, Mussolini earned a reputation as a political journalist and public speaker. In 1915 Mussolini was drafted into the Italian army, starting his famous career.
In 1919 the Fascist Party was established, named after the Italian peasant revolutionaries, or party (History). Mussolini’s mindset was in the right-wing organization. The Fascist Party advocated Italian nationalism. Within the Fascist Party, he launched a program of terrorism and intimidation against its leftist opponents. In 1922 Italy was facing trouble with politics and the Black Shirts marched through Rome. Mussolini presented himself as the only person capable of restoring order. King Victor Emmanuel invited Mussolini to form a government. Mussolini gradually dismantled the institutions of democratic government and in 1925 made himself dictator. |
Rising To Power
The Italian Civil war resulted in Benito Mussolini being victorious. After the civil war, Italy believed that they were successful and were going to gain more land and money. To Benito Mussolini’s disappointment, they didn't end up getting much at all. Mussolini and Hitler were both nationalists and both had the same beliefs. Working together, Hitler helped Mussolini get back into power.
In September 1937, Mussolini visited Germany. Hitler put on a major display of military power for Mussolini and by the end of the visit, Mussolini became convinced that Germany was the power he should ally with. Hitler also assured that he would help Mussolini, for they had become strong allies. A way Hitler persuaded Mussolini to join sides was to convince Mussolini that Hitler would help Italy gain back "their" land. Germany and Italy both joined sides, creating the axis side. |
