During the War
In World War II, Canada made its own separate declaration of war and played a critical role in supporting the Allied war effort. Canada entered the war one week after Britain did because they wanted to show their independence from Britain and many Canadians were fearful of the war because due to the previous horrors of WWI
Important Battles
Normandy Campaign: On June 6 1944, known as D-Day, Allied troops stormed German defences on the beaches of Normandy (France). The Canadians advanced against the best troops the enemy had. Normandy campaign was a victory, however the Canadians suffered the most casualties of any division in the British Army Group. |
Battle of the Atlantic: This was Canada's longest military battle between armed forces of the Second World War, lasting from September 1939 to May 1945. This battle was bravely fought by the men and women of the Canadian Merchant Navy, the Royal Canadian Navy and the Royal Canadian Air Force. More than 4,600 men and women lost their lives at sea.

Italian Campaign: This Campaign in July 10, 1943 was an important military effort for Canada during the Second World War. More than 93,000 Canadians, along with Great Britain, France and the United States, played a significant role. As they pushed from the south to the north of Italy over a 20-month period, Canadians faced difficult battles against some of the German army's best troops. Canadian casualties in the Italian Campaign totalled over 26,000, of which about 6,000 were fatal.
