Unemployment
The country also had to deal with having many soldiers not returning from the war as one out of ten soldiers did not survive. As well as the fact that English and French conflicts were on the rise. During the early years after the war there was a labour revolt but by 1921 it had subsided, partly because of federal intervention and partly because of the onset of an economic downturn that brought increased unemployment and a virtual collapse of union power.

Great Depression
With its economy so heavily dependent on natural resource extraction, Canada was especially hard hit by the Great Depression that followed the crash of the U.S. stock market in October 1929. Around 1930 unemployment soared, industrial production collapsed, and prices, especially for farm commodities, fell rapidly as demand for all manner of consumer goods virtually disappeared. One positive during the 1930’s was that mining expanded in Northern Ontario and Northwestern Quebec area, they were mainly goldfields. THe depression created to new very important political parties, and in 1935 the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (CCF) in 1932 and the Social Credit Party. The Liberal government was deeply concerned with the devastation the economic depression wrought on government finances. In 1936 an official inquiry by the Bank of Canada revealed that the Prairie Provinces were near bankruptcy. Shortly after that the interwar years came to a close and WWII had started.
